Acropolis Of Athens

The Acropolis of Athens, like any other acropolis, was the upper or upper part ( ákros ) of the city ( pólis). Although the term acropolis can be used to designate any walled settlement in an elevated area, its use is often restricted to ancient Greek cities, where such constructions were very frequent.

The Acropolis of Athens only consisted of temples and public spaces in the classical era, although it was inhabited in earlier stages. The original temples worshiped different gods, but especially Athena. In the 16th century the Acropolis was Christianized and in the middle of the 16th century Islamized. In addition, he had military uses during the Persian occupations.

According to experts, the Acropolis hill would have been occupied since the third millennium BC, although the oldest archaeological and written evidences begin with the Mycenaean Period. By 1,200 BC there would already be a palace and some walls, then following the construction of several temples already disappeared. The main monuments of the Acropolis that are preserved today belong to the "Golden Age" of Athens (480 - 404 BC), also called the " Century of Pericles ".
